In 2024, powerful storms ravaged the southeastern United States, the area of the country that I call home. When Hurricane Helene tore through, much of the state lost power, including my family. Despite working for an LED company with many battery-operated work lights and trouble lights, we did not have a single one when we needed it. In this post, I want to go through my experience and talk about how LED lights are a must-have in your emergency preparedness kits.
Nighttime Is Much Darker Than You Think
One of the first things I noticed on the first night was how dark it was inside and outside. Obviously, the power was out, so not only were the lights inside the houses on my street off, but streetlights, landscaping lights, and the glowing lights over the horizon were gone. If it hadn’t been for the thick cloud cover, we may have been able to see the stars for the first time from our front porch.
But with this darkness came obvious problems. While we could cook on a grill, we couldn’t see what we were cooking. If we had to move from one room to another, we would use our dim old incandescent flashlight to get the barest minimum of light. And if we had the tools to go out and help clear the roads, we would have been at the mercy of the headlights of our car.
LEDs That Will Keep You Ready
With all that in mind, these are the LED products I would recommend that you have in your preparedness kits.
First, I recommend that you have multiple rechargeable handheld work lights for you and your family to move around the house to whatever they might need. GT-Lite’s Handheld Rechargeable Work Light Flashlight is perfect for this.
Secondly, I recommend that you have a rechargeable work light to help light up larger areas. This will help light up areas where your family gathers or give you the light you might need to perform any emergency repairs to your home. GT-Lite’s 2,000-lumen LED rechargeable work light is a great choice due to its built-in battery and compact design. If you have a generator or solar-powered battery, you may want a more powerful work light so you can join in the disaster relief efforts. GT-Lite carries powerful work lights with powerful lumen outputs.
