While replacing incandescent lights with LEDs to achieve greater energy savings is becoming increasingly rare, there are still options to ensure that you are using the most efficient LED bulb. Not all LEDs are created equally. Unlike incandescent bulbs that create light by heating a wire filament, LEDs create light by passing electricity through a semiconductor, which is vastly more efficient. The more effectively that an LED can convert electricity to light, the more efficient an LED light can be.
The Jump from Incandescents. What is the New Baseline?
The old standard for home lighting was the 60W bulb. As its name suggests, it uses 60 watts to create roughly 800 lumens of light. This means that an incandescent bulb has an efficacy of 13.3. GT-Lite’s equivalent LED bulb creates 800 lumens of light while only using 9 watts, which gives you an efficacy rating of 88.89. This is almost 7 times more efficient than an incandescent bulb. These standard LED bulbs are great for general lighting and can save people incredible amounts of power, but they are the baseline. GT-Lite produces even more efficient bulbs under its Lumen Tough line. When you want to go beyond the basic, you need to use Lumen Tough bulbs.
Lumen Tough LED Bulbs
Lumen Touch LED bulbs are more efficient and last longer than other LED bulbs. While the standard LED light bulb has an efficacy of 88.89, the Lumen tough line ranges from between 112.5 and 155. This makes Lumen Tough bulbs great for anyone who is trying to maximize their energy savings.
Product | Lumens | Watts | Efficacy |
GT-CB-26CCTP | 2,600 | 18W | 144.4 |
GT-CB-40CCTP | 3,900 | 27W | 144.4 |
GT-CTB-40WET | 4,500 | 40W | 112.5 |
GT-CB-70EC | 6,975 | 45W | 155 |
Not only do these bulbs outclass standard LEDs in efficiency, but they also outclass standard LEDs in their extended lifespans and use case ratings. All four Lumen Tough bulbs have 50,000-hour operational lifespans, as well as enclosed fixture ratings. The GT-CTB-40WET is even wet rated, making it great for outdoor use.
Extended Lifespans:
When you see a light bulb or light fixture’s lifespan estimated, you will see that estimation measured in hours. This doesn’t mean that once you turn a light on, the clock is ticking, and once you hit that number of hours, the bulb is instantly shut off. The lifespan of a bulb is a rating that estimates its total operational hours. In an ideal environment, the bulb would meet or exceed the estimation, but people don’t live in perfectly controlled laboratory settings. What you can take away from these lifespan ratings is determining the quality of the LED.
Standard LEDs can have a life rating of around 10,000 hours. This rating can increase with the quality of the LED bulb, and of course, Lumen Tough Bulbs have much longer ratings. Each Lumen Tough bulb is rated to last 50,000 hours. If you were to use these bulbs for 3 hours a day, 7 days a week, they could last you 45 years or more.
Great for:
Lumen Tough LED bulbs are great for any situation where energy efficiency is paramount. Use these bulbs in floodlights, sidewalk lights, post lights, parking lot lights, garages, barns, warehouses, workshops, and much more.
